Course Details

Who is this course for? Anyone who is interested in finding out the professional way to renovate vintage furniture or simply those who want to learn a new craft or make their own totally unique footstool. What will I learn? You will learn about the different materials and tools used in upholstery, why they are used, the different weights and strengths of the build fabrics (hessian, webbing etc) and which to choose for different jobs. The course covers the full traditional upholstery of a small footstool from building the “deck” with webbing and hessian, stuffing and stitching the scrim to build height and finally wadding and finishing with your beautiful chosen top fabric. The course will also highlight the differences between traditional and modern upholstery techniques to give learners a feel for which should be used in different renovation projects. Learners will leave with the confidence to use their newly acquired skills and knowledge to tackle their own upholstery projects. What’s included? - An upholstery toolkit containing the fundamental tools for upholstery: mallet, ripping chisel, web-stretcher, tack hammer, staple lifter, 10” scissors - A hardwood footstool frame with pre installed M8 leg fixings - All materials used in the footstool build (excluding top fabric and legs) - An information sheet detailing materials used and listing upholstery suppliers - Tea, coffee and biscuits What do I need to bring? - A notebook, pen and a camera to document your project for your future reference. - Lunch! - Your chosen top fabric (must be upholstery grade) - 1m sufficient - A contrast colour fabric for your piping (if desired) - the piping can be sewn in class or at home, or bought ready-made Extras We can provide top fabric - get in touch prior to the course start if you want us to source samples and purchase fabric We can provide a variety of different styles of footstool legs
